A new report indicates that the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, set to launch this summer, might forgo S Pen support to achieve a thinner profile. This move would reportedly reduce the phone's thickness by 12%, allowing it to be noticeably slimmer than the regular Galaxy Z Fold 4.
A new report suggests that a feature long associated with the Galaxy Z Fold series might disappear with the release of the highly anticipated device this summer. Since the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, the book-style foldable phone has integrated support for Samsung 's S Pen digital stylus. However, Samsung might be pulling this support with the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition model, which is available in South Korea and China (known as the Samsung W25 in China).
By removing S Pen support from the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, Samsung is expected to eliminate the need for a digitizer, resulting in a noticeable reduction in thickness. The phone is rumored to achieve a thickness of 4.9mm when open and 10.6mm when closed, a 12% decrease compared to the regular Galaxy Z Fold 4, which measures 5.6mm when open and 12.1mm when closed. The digitizer layer is responsible for recognizing signals from the S Pen and converting them into touch inputs. The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is said to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite AP, the first Snapdragon processor manufactured using the 3nm node. This advanced chipset promises improved performance and energy efficiency. Interestingly, rumors suggest that the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, unlike its regular counterpart, might feature only seven CPU cores instead of the standard eight. The upcoming foldable phone's potential slimming down might come at the cost of S Pen functionality, raising questions about how this change will affect the user experience
