The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra elevates AI beyond a buzzword, integrating it seamlessly into its design and functionality. With features like Now Brief, AI Select, and Audio Eraser, the S25 Ultra offers a glimpse into the future of smartphone interactions. While hardware upgrades are subtle, the software advancements, powered by a new Galaxy chipset, deliver a truly transformative experience.
Samsung has taken AI beyond a mere buzzword, seamlessly integrating it into the Galaxy S25 Ultra as its defining feature. Unveiled at Galaxy Unpacked in San Jose, the new flagship smartphone boasts more contextual AI capabilities that are poised to revolutionize user interaction. While hardware upgrades aren't the focal point, the Galaxy S25 Ultra excels in software enhancements, delivering features that evolve with usage.
A standout addition is the Now Brief, providing informative summaries at 9 PM and 6 AM daily. Drawing from your schedule, weather patterns, and Samsung Health data, it offers insights into your sleep, exercise routines, and overall well-being. Notably, it can analyze your health metrics and suggest adjustments to your day, recommending a slower pace or highlighting your readiness for the day's challenges. For those who often neglect syncing data from smart rings or smartwatches, Now Brief proves invaluable by presenting key information front and center. Beyond health insights, Now Brief can deliver updates on new content from your favorite artists, upcoming sports fixtures, scores, and more. This information can be accessed through a dedicated widget or the Now Bar, a software-driven feature integrated into One UI 7.0. Positioned at the bottom of the lock screen, Now Bar functions like the Dynamic Island but with enhanced capabilities. During a demo, triggering the stopwatch and initiating an exercise resulted in corresponding cards appearing at the bottom of the screen, stacked atop each other. Interacting with these cards is seamless: simply wake up the phone (without unlocking) and swipe up to cycle through them. This intuitive system appears genuinely helpful and will be available on the Galaxy S24 Ultra with the One UI 7.0 update. Further enhancing context awareness, the Galaxy S25 Ultra excels in photo searching within the Gallery app. This offline functionality leverages on-device learning to understand and display relevant results. Similarly, within the Settings menu, asking it to “make text visible” presents options like High Contrast Mode, Font Size, and Text Reader—effectively addressing visual accessibility needs—instead of generic “text” options. Samsung is also transforming Smart Select into AI Select, which analyzes onscreen content and suggests actions accordingly. For example, highlighting a date in an email or web invitation triggers suggestions for calendar entries or reminders. Other notable AI-powered features include generating GIFs from selected video segments, summarizing lengthy text blocks, and more. Generative Edit has also received improvements, delivering faster and more accurate results when removing unwanted people or objects from pictures. Waiting times have been significantly reduced, and the feature now even detects and removes shadows associated with these unwanted elements. One of the most impressive new Galaxy AI features is Audio Eraser. Functioning similarly to the iPhone 16's Audio Mix, it identifies six distinct noise categories: Voices, Wind, Nature, Crowd, Background, and Speaker. Users can select, isolate, and edit the desired sounds within their videos. Demonstrations proved remarkably effective, showcasing its potential for content creators. While the Galaxy S25 Ultra boasts a refined design, it's lighter, thinner, and features a 6.9-inch screen in a 218-gram (down from 232 grams) and 8.2mm (previously 8.6mm) body. This makes it one of the lightest big-screen flagship smartphones currently available. However, the flatter sides, while contributing to the weight reduction, may not enhance in-hand comfort due to their sharp edges. The rounded corners, although improving palm contact compared to the S24 Ultra, result in a less secure fit for the S Pen.A notable change is the removal of the shutter button functionality from the S Pen. Users can no longer utilize the stylus to capture photos or switch between cameras. This proves disappointing as it was a frequently used feature since the S22 Ultra. The AMOLED display retains its sharp, vibrant visuals with a QHD+ resolution and dynamic 120Hz refresh rate. Protected by Corning Gorilla Armor 2 glass, it features the same anti-reflective coating as the Galaxy S24 Ultra, enhancing outdoor legibility. The smartphone is powered by a new Galaxy chipset, optimized for the Galaxy AI features, and comes with 12GB of RAM and three storage variants: 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB
