The Samsung Galaxy S25, not yet commercially available, has received its first security update, a move that surprises buyers and highlights Samsung's commitment to security. The update rollout precedes the official February release, marking an early step in protecting users. Besides this, Samsung has finally adopted Seamless Updates, a feature that allows for faster, smoother updates without requiring a full restart. This technology, previously available on Google Pixel devices and other brands, represents a significant shift for Samsung.
Samsung 's newest Galaxy S25 has already received its first security update , with February's monthly patch reported to hit the new device before any other smartphones, but also before February, if we're being pedantic. This will surprise buyers — in a good way — who don't even have the phone in their hands yet. However, that's not the biggest new security update difference the S25 will hold over older Galaxy phones.
Samsung has finally adopted Seamless Updates, years after Pixels and others were doing the same. Originally, this option downloaded and installed monthly updates in the background to a separate partition on the phone, enabling a quick restart, rather than the much longer install and reboot. Now the option has smartened further, and uses a virtual partition which targets portions of the update separately, using less storage. Seamless Updates debuted in 2016 as a part of Android Nougat, and have been used ever since on Google Pixel devices, and adopted by many other brands over time. But Samsung has held off for a very long time. On our Galaxy S25 Ultra, Seamless Updates are directly supported on a system level, as reported back by the Inware app. It's unclear why this has taken Samsung so long to adopt, there was certainly a push from Google and Android for this to be done sooner. Samsung is Android’s leading OEM by some margin, and so this is a major shift. Besides the usability improvements that come with Seamless Updates, says, “the A/B partition nature of the method also makes it possible for Android to fall back to a stable software build if something goes wrong with a new update.” This isn’t the biggest security bugbear for Samsung owners. That would be the unpredictable monthly trickle-down effect as the update makes its way out by model, country and carrier. In itself, this won’t change that, it just makes it easier when it arrives. We are still holding out for something more akin to an everyone, everywhere, all at once approach that would further help Samsung catch iPhone in the security stakes, as they get ready for this brave (not so) new world. But only Galaxy S25 owners of course. This isn’t expected on older devices, even flagships, given the hardware requirements. But that could change and the bar is now lower with the new virtual partitions which are the default in Android 15. If Samsung does have something clever up its sleeve on this, we should know soon enough. But I suspect the continued wait for Android 15 will be much more on those users’ minds
