Spider-Man's organic webbing is coming back
When Spider-Man: No Way Home printed money, I’m sure Sony and Marvel were tempted to just do it all over again, and have Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men show up alongside Tom Holland in Spider-Man 4, too.
But that would’ve been a classic case of diminishing returns, and the studios wisely avoided that temptation and instead went the other way. After a decade’s worth of Spider-Man movies giving Peter Parker the full resources of Stark Industries, sending him into space to fight aliens, and busting open the multiverse to introduce him to his own alternate selves, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is going back to the character’s roots.
Going into Brand New Day, Peter has no money, no connections, and no futuristic tech. He’s not an Avenger preparing to take on Doctor Doom; he’s just a friendly neighborhood vigilante, tackling street crime in his hometown. He’s lonely, strapped for cash, and living in the crummiest apartment in New York, and yet he still chooses to put on spandex and risk his life to make the city a little safer every day.
That captures the essence of Spidey’s character a lot more effectively than fighting aliens with Doctor Strange or massacring Outriders with the “Insta-Kill” setting on his Iron Man suit or ripping a hole in the fourth wall to cross over with other Spider-Man movies. Those movies were all really fun, but it didn’t feel like Spider-Man in the traditional sense.
While the movie could surprise us on July 31, I don’t think Maguire or Garfield will be making an appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and that’s probably for the best. But the new movie does have one huge nod to Maguire’s Spider-Man with the organic webbing storyline. Holland’s Spidey is about to develop his own organic webbing, just like Maguire did in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy.
Organic Webbing Is A Dicey Issue Among Spider-Man Fans Whether Spider-Man’s webs should be organically produced by his body or artificially produced by devices on his wrists is a major hot-button issue among the fan base. Traditionally, in the comics, Peter creates his own web fluid that he then loads into the webshooters on his wrists.
But Raimi’s movies made organic webbing one of Peter’s powers, so his body secretes the webbing naturally, and all he has to do is make the sign of the horns with his fingers to sling a web, any size, catching thieves just like flies. Organic webbing is undoubtedly much grosser, but it arguably makes more sense in the context of Spidey’s origin story.
The bite of a radioactive spider gave Peter super-strength, super-agility, super-reflexes, and the ability to crawl on walls, so why would it not also give him the power to shoot his own spider webs? It gave him every other ability that a spider has, so why would he have to create the webs himself? It’s more consistent if the radioactive spider bite gave Peter all his powers, but it creates more tension if he has to create the webs himself.
If the webs come out of his wrists organically, then he’ll always be able to save himself from a nasty fall. But the synthetic web fluid in his webshooters eventually runs out, and it’s not always a convenient time to refill them. Up to this point, Holland’s Spidey has created his own web fluid. When he met Maguire’s Spidey in No Way Home, he was shocked to learn that he produces organic webbing.
But in the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we see that, as Peter goes through a sort of spider-puberty, he starts producing organic webbing of his own. This movie might even up the body horror from Raimi’s trilogy and turn him into Man-Spider.
