Sam Moore, one half of the legendary soul duo Sam & Dave, passed away at 89. Known for hits like 'Soul Man' and 'Hold On, I'm Comin', Moore's powerful vocals and energetic performances left an indelible mark on the music world.
Sam Moore , the surviving half and higher voice of the 1960s soul duo Sam & Dave , known for hits like ' Soul Man ' and 'Hold On, I'm Comin', has died at 89. Moore passed away Friday morning in Coral Gables, Florida, due to complications during surgery recovery. Moore, who influenced musicians like Michael Jackson, Al Green, and Bruce Springsteen, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Dave Prater in 1992.
At Stax Records in Memphis, Moore and Prater were a force, transforming gospel's 'call and response' into a dynamic stage show. They recorded some of soul music's most enduring hits, including 'You Don't Know Like I Know', 'When Something is Wrong With My Baby', and 'I Thank You'. Moore and Prater, who died in a 1988 car crash, had a tumultuous relationship, marked by arguments and Prater's later decision to tour as 'The New Sam & Dave' with a substitute. Moore also spent years battling legal claims regarding royalties and retirement benefits. Despite the duo's break-up in 1970, 'Soul Man' experienced a resurgence in the late 1970s with the Blues Brothers' cover. Moore had mixed feelings about the association, remembering how younger fans thought the song originated with the Blues Brothers. In later years, Moore showcased his versatility by writing a song for Bob Dole's 1996 presidential campaign and performing at Donald Trump's 2017 inauguration.
