Ohio State product Sam Hubbard made one of the biggest plays in Bengals history as the Bengals advanced to the second round.

The Cincinnati kid who grew up going to Cincinnati Bengals games picked up the ball at the two-yard line. When the play started, the Moeller High School graduate was watching his hometown team collapse. A season that was all about winning the Super Bowl was falling apart in a first-round playoff game against a Baltimore Ravens team that was starting a backup quarterback.

When Hubbard finally got to sit down on the Bengals’ bench, he put on an oxygen mask. Then he flexed. The Bengals survived their first-round matchup with a 24-17 win over the Ravens. Baltimore was a foot away from taking the lead, but another timely turnover by the Bengals defense led the Bengals to a second-round matchup next week against the Buffalo Bills.

Most defensive ends wouldn’t have been able to make a play like this one, but Hubbard’s story isn’t like most defensive ends.Growing up, Hubbard was a lacrosse star. When he gave football a shot at Moeller, Hubbard spent his entire high school career as a defensive back. He weighed 205 pounds during his senior year of high school, and committed to Ohio State to play linebacker.

Late in the third quarter, the Bengals were up 17-10. Burrow was rolling, Ja’Marr Chase was consistently getting open and the Bengals looked like they were on their way to a comfortable win. Between 1991 and 2020, the Bengals’ playoff losses were defined by what they didn’t have. In 2005, the Bengals lost because Carson Palmer got hurt. In 2011, Andy Dalton was just a rookie. The Bengals’ first-round game in 2014 has been remembered as the one where Rex Burkhead needed to play wide receiver. In 2015, Dalton was injured.
