The Salvation Army Coastal Alabama Area Command will close the Family Haven residential shelter effective July 31, 2026. Family Haven has provided emergency shelter and supportive services for families experiencing homelessness since 2010.
The decision to close the residential program was made after careful review of available funding, the condition of the facility, and the long-term sustainability of the shelter.
“Our immediate concern is for the families currently in our care,” said Captain Richard Watts, Area Commander for The Salvation Army Coastal Alabama Area Command. “We are committed to walking alongside each household through this transition with compassion, dignity and individualized support. Our team is working closely with residents and community partners to help identify the safest and most appropriate next steps for every family.
” The Salvation Army is providing direct case management throughout the transition and coordinating with community partners to connect residents with housing, shelter and other available support. While each household’s needs and circumstances are different, no family will be expected to navigate this process alone. The Salvation Army will continue providing intensive, nonresidential case management to eligible families through the Pathway of Hope program.
Pathway of Hope provides targeted assistance to families with children to address barriers to long-term stability through individualized planning and connections to available services and resources. The closure of Family Haven does not affect The Salvation Army’s other programs and services across Coastal Alabama. The Salvation Army will continue to provide meals, food assistance, utility assistance, case management, disaster relief, transportation support, and other services to individuals and families throughout the community.
