Salvadoran surfers continue to honor top female surfer Katherine Díaz, who was killed by a lightning strike during a training session.
Shortly before Christmas, just as she was beginning to step up her training for the Olympic surfing trials,At one point, the women were handed lined loose-leaf paper and asked to draw a picture of themselves in the future. But Díaz didn’t imagine the medal platform in Tokyo. Instead, she drew herself riding a huge blue wave under a bright sun, a lone fluorescent-yellow thunderbolt streaking toward her.
“She knew what would happen to her,” her brother José “Bamba” Díaz said last week, standing in front of the tinyhis mother runs just a few dozen paces from the beach where her daughter died. Next to the small diner someone has painted a stark, mostly black-and-white mural of a pensive Katherine, eyes closed and her long black hair draped over one shoulder. “Kathy,” painted in thin white italic letters, runs across the bottom.
Katherine Díaz competes during the National Surf Circuit at the beaches of El Tunco on Nov. 29, 2020, in La Libertad, El Salvador., whose own Olympic ambitions came up just short.
