An incumbent Salt Lake City School Board member is facing a felony charge after he allegedly attempted to bribe his opponent so he could keep his position in Pr

ecinct 5.

In 2024, Russell Askren and Mohamed Baayd were both running for a position on the Salt Lake City School Board, Precinct 5.On Feb. 20, Askren reportedly received a text message from an unknown number, later discovered to be Bayyd's, asking him to meet up and talk. They met for the first time at a coffee shop on March 7.

Baayd then told Askren that he knew a council member position was going to open in two years. Baayd said he was planning on running and had a "very good chance of winning," court documents state. In exchange for withdrawing, Baayd told Askren that over the next two years, he would involve Askren in the work of the school board and make sure he got to know everybody involved, court documents state.
