The seven elementary schools that could possibly close include Hawthorne, Emerson, Bennion, Mary W. Jackson, Newman, Riley, and Wasatch Elementary.

"We've lost about 30 percent of our elementary school enrollment in the past nine years. In our schools in Salt Lake City, we have 15,000 elementary school spots, but we have just under 9,000 elementary students right now," she said.Salt Lake City School District moving forward with study of potential school closuresChatwin said this is a process that started back in 2022. A final decision won't be made until next year.

During his speech , he said Emerson Elementary is the school he first attended when he moved to Salt Lake as a child. He said it's where he learned to speak English and where he met his life-long friend. For him, losing Emerson would mean "losing history and losing part of his identity." "It would mean we might have to send my kid back to a school that failed them and gave up on them so quickly," she said.
