FILE - Four persons of interest were being questioned Wednesday morning, Dec. 11, 2024, after an early-morning armed robbery at an RV parked in a Salt Lake City homeless encampment. Mayor Erin Mendenhall on Jan. 16, 2025, released a comprehensive plan to tackle the issues of crime and homelessness in the city.
The plan is a response to an invitation from Utah Gov. Spencer Cox and the state's Congressional leadership, according to a statement from the mayor's office on Thursday. It would accomplish its goal through what Mendenhall said would be both immediate actions and long-term systemic reforms.Among the most significant immediate actions, city-owned property will be used to create emergency housing, adding about 1,000 shelter beds while the state develops a permanent locations.
