History is being made on the ice this week at the Maverik Center, as Salt Lake City is hosting the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships for the first time. It's a fitting stage, with the 2034 Winter Olympics coming here, as synchro is hoping for a spot of its own at the Games.Call has been doing synchro for seven years and is one of the athletes competing. "It's almost like cheerleading on ice in a way, with the lifts and spirals," she said. "It's very artistic. It's also very strict with lines. "We have 86 teams represented by 1,700 athletes," U.S. Figure Skating Director of Events Megan Romeo said. "They're coming from California to Massachusetts and everywhere in between." Other skating disciplines have one or two skaters on the ice. In synchro, as many as 16 skaters perform together, creating formations in perfect unison. "They're adding jumps and spins," Call said. "They're kind of combining it with individual, which is really cool." Call skates on the Star Lit Blades Novice Team, the only team from Utah to compete at Nationals. She and her teammates qualified in their first season together. "The majority of our team has never done synchro before," Call said. "We're all individual skaters, which is really cool. Learning to skate together as one has gotten a lot better since the beginning of the year."Utah Gymnastics Coach Carly Dockendorf and Makenna Smith preview Sprouts Collegiate Quad One of the top squads at Synchro Nationals is Teams Elite. The Junior team from Illinois won its third straight national title in Salt Lake City. The 2025 World Junior Champions now turn their focus to the international stage. They'll look to defend their title in Poland in mid-March. "It's honestly a dream come true," Teams Elite Skater Maddie Ortiz said. "It's probably the greatest thing you can do in synchro right now." Synchronized skaters across the country are still chasing another dream. Synchro isn't an Olympic sport, but many within U.S. Figure Skating are fighting to change that. "They're so passionate," Romeo said. "There's so much athleticism partnered with artistry and the teamwork element on top of it. It's really a well-rounded packaged sport." There's already momentum. Synchronized Skating will debut at the 2028 Winter Youth Olympics in Italy. It's a step toward possibly adding it to the 2030 Olympics or 2034 games in Salt Lake City. While Star Lit Blades skaters like Abby Hickok train under the Olympic rings at the Utah Olympic Oval right now, the hope is that one day they'll skate across them in competition. "Oh my goodness, that would be amazing," Hickok said. "I would feel so represented. I'd feel like I could go wherever I wanted to go with it and that I'd have opportunities for me."Triple homicide suspect admits to killing women for cars, money; dragging bodies Ivan Miller, 22, of Blakesburg, Iowa, was charged for the killings of three women in their 30s, 60s, and 80s.The suspect in a Wayne County triple homicide made his first appearance in a Colorado court after being charged with aggravated murder.Ivan Miller, a 22-year-olThe mother of an 11-year-old girl who died in an avalanche near Brighton Ski Resort is speaking publicly for the first time, sharing memories of her daughter anFamily of two Wayne County murder victims released a statement after the women were found dead at a trailhead.Their statement was published on the Wayne and GarA man accused of killing three women in Utah and stealing their cars and credit cards was already known to police in Iowa: He was arrested there on suspicion of
