According to the National Weather Service, Emigration Creek dropped below flood stage overnight, and is expected to continue to drop through Saturday.
Although water coursing through Emigration Creek has slowed considerably, a voluntary evacuation order remained in effect for about 100 homes near Wasatch Hollow on Thursday morning.
After high temperatures in the 80s on Tuesday and the upper 70s on Wednesday, a cold front moving through Utah on Thursday dropped temperatures into the 40s. As of Thursday morning, city officials had not designated any evacuation centers or shelters for residents whose homes were impacted. Friday’s forecast high is in the 50s and 60s, followed by 70 degrees on Saturday and Sunday and the low 70s on Monday. More cooling is expected Tuesday. “That will slow snowpack melting,” Kruse said. Many residents who live near the creek feel like they dodged a bullet on Wednesday night, but there were a few anxious moments.
“This morning, as we all got up and took a look, the water [was] way lower,” she said. “So we’re breathing a sigh of relief.”Salt Lake City officials are asking for volunteers to fill sandbags Thursday afternoon near 1700 East and 1700 South, where sand is piled along the road alongside trucks and other heavy machinery.
