The city of Dallas and the Park and Recreation Department are responsible only for the land and buildings within the park.

Proceeds of the “estate sale” will go to the Heritage Society as city of Dallas prepares to take over day-to-day operation of historic park.

As an accredited museum, the most historically valuable items have been donated to other museums, libraries, historical societies and organizations that will preserve them for educational purposes. Some items will remain in the park to furnish the buildings. However, the 22,000 remaining artifacts will be part of an “estate sale” that will take place at the end of April. The proceeds will go to the Heritage Society.

“People want to see what those houses looked like on the inside and how people lived,” said Bennignus. “The worry is that getting rid of these antiques and selling them off is going to take so much of that aesthetic away.” Dallas District 2 Council Member Jesse Moreno said the perception that the city is not preserving the history of the city’s first park is false. He said that’s why the city hired design firm SWA Group, said the Park and Recreation Department, the City Council and the city manager should have started a plan to preserve the historic museum a year ago.
