The Schools Our Students Deserve Coalition says SAISD should slow down its plans for a board decision in November on closures in the 2024-2025 school year.

Members of several organizations criticized the district’s planned process for deciding on school closures.A coalition of community groups representing teachers, parents, students, employees and residents of the San Antonio Independent School District said they want any proposals to close or consolidate schools decided by people in the district.
Jennifer Tobias, SAISD parent and founding member of Our Schools San Antonio, said the initiative is on a “rushed timeline.”“The district says it values community input. But how can we possibly have robust community engagement in that amount of time?” Tobias said. “If done properly, this evaluation process could be an opportunity for political education, a model for civic discourse.”
District officials have said the board would vote on a slate of changes as a single proposal on Nov. 13. Aquino and trustees have said it will be guided by research and informed by an “We still feel like this process is artificially truncated, particularly the engagement that’s going to happen around the framework itself,” she said in an interview. “That is a real opportunity to engage our community in ways that they haven’t been before, around what their vision is for our schools and our district.”
