Off the bat, it was questionable if St. Augustine High shortstop Cade Martinez could get to the ball, let alone start a double play.
“I know my range, and I knew I could get to the ball,” said Martinez, who had two hits and drove in the tying run in a two-run, sixth-inning rally. “I had to get a little creative on the throw, so give all the credit to Frankie Carney for staying on the bag and turning it.” Foothill scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to take the lead. But the Saints scored twice in the sixth when Domenic Carini reached on a bunt single, went to second on a balk and third on a wild pitch.
With a lead, da Luz went to the bullpen, replacing starter Manny Butler, who allowed two runs on three hits over five innings, with Calvin Shaw. Shaw set Foothill down in order in the sixth with the help of a nice catch by Rhee in center, got the first batter in the seventh, then walked a batter, setting up the game-ending double play.
