The county’s first Safe Haven Baby Box is being dedicated in Stow Thursday afternoon.
SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio - The Stow Fire Department has installed Summit County’s first Safe Haven Baby Box at Fire Station Two, providing parents a secure space to surrender newborn babies anonymously. The temperature-controlled box allows parents to give up their baby without facing legal consequences under Ohio’s Safe Haven Law.
Parents can surrender an infant no older than 30 days to designated safe locations, including hospitals, fire stations or police stations. To access the baby box, parents park in a designated spot in front of the fire station and walk through the front entrance, which remains open 24 hours a day. When a parent places an infant in the box, an alarm alerts the fire department crew, who then transport the baby to the hospital. “The hospital will take over from there, where DCPS or your local child services department will be called, and they’ll go over to the state, where they will become available for foster to adopt,” said Jessi Getrost with Safe Haven Baby Boxes.“Just know that you are not doing anything wrong. You are doing the right thing because you are looking out for the child,” Stone said.Getrost said the installation addresses a significant problem nationwide. The Stow installation marks Ohio’s 21st baby box, part of an effort advocates hope will reduce unsafe infant abandonments.North Ridgeville police identify 16-year-old girl killed after being hit by carGeneral Motors to invest $250M in metal center
