San Antonio FC set to play for first championship Sunday at Toyota Field

Borrowing from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and many others before him, Marcina instilled the mantra of “mentality monsters,” emphasizing qualities such as cohesion, competitiveness and resilience. “We really thrive in chaos, and we thrive in mentally being the strongest team that there can be,” Dhillon said. “Mentality monsters are going to be out on Sunday, for everyone to see.”
Though Gomez expects plenty of sparks, explosive goal-scoring seems unlikely, as the matchup pits the league’s two most stout defenses. Behind USL Defender of the Year Mitchell Taintor and Goalkeeper of the Year Jordan Farr, San Antonio FC allowed just 26 goals this season, outpacing Louisville’s 30 goals conceded for the top spot in the USL Championship.
Through the year, “mentality monsters” has captured different traits for San Antonio, starting with the stamina and intensity required to play a high-pressure style for 90 minutes. For former goalkeeper Matt Cardone, who played with the club through every season before retiring in July, the sum of those qualities made this San Antonio group stand out.
