Sadorra returns for Team PH in World Chess Olympiad

National Chess Federation of the Philippines made the announcement this week where the United States-based Sadorra will join reigning national champion International Master Daniel Quizon, GM John Paul Gomez, IMs Paolo Bersamina and Jan Emmanuel Garcia with GM Eugene Torre as head coach.

Grandmaster Julio Catalino Sadorra is expected to join Team Philippines as its top board player for the 44GM Julio Catalino Sadorra is expected to banner the Philippine men's team in the 44th World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary in September.

This will be the fourth time that Sadorra is competing in the Olympiad after seeing action in Tromso, Norway in 2014, in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2016 and in Batumi, Georgia in 2018. Woman Grandmaster Janelle Frayna, meanwhile, banner the women’s team that has WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda and reigning national women’s champion Woman FIDE Master Ruelle Canino.

Shania Mae Mendoza, Kylen Joy Mordido, Bernadette Galas, Marie Antoinette San Diego, Allaney Jia Doroy and Cherry Ann Mejia are currently contesting the last two berths in a double-round robin tournament at the PACE in Mindanao Ave, Quezon City. “Ang nilista muna namin ay si Mordido at Galas pero papalitan din namin ng kung sino mag top two sa elimination na ito,” said Gonzales, who also coaches the national women’s squad.
