THIRTY YEARS ago, Stephen Lawrence was stolen from his family and friends in an act of unspeakable cruelty – a savage attack motivated by nothing else than the colour of his skin.anniversary of his terrible murder, we remember and celebrate Stephen’s life and legacy, as well as recognise the extraordinary efforts and campaigning that has taken place in his name to create a fairer and more just society.

It is etched irrevocably in our history, and it sent a ripple of fear through our communities, leaving us terrified for the safety of ourselves and our loved ones.But what will also always stay with us is the abject failure in the aftermath of those institutions that were supposed to serve and protect us – the Metropolitan Police Service, the media and many politicians, the very people and authorities who we expected we could turn to for support were not with us.

It was Doreen’s tireless campaigning, along with the rest of the Lawrence family and their team, that led to the Macpherson report and the determination that the Metropolitan Police was institutionally racist. Three decades on, however, we’re not where we hoped to be. Baroness Casey’s recent review into the culture of the Met Police hasWhile progress may have been made, the Met remains institutionally racist. This is a reality we simply can’t ignore or equivocate on. Rather, we must confront this truth and recommit to eradicating racism from the Met and from every other sector and sphere of our society.
