Sadiq Khan backs taking statues of slave owners down and renaming road signs
SADIQ Khan has demanded statues of slave owners be taken down and streets and squares renamed to be more representative of Britain.
"Sadiq Khan doesn’t lead, he’s gone missing throughout this coronavirus outbreak, he’s shirked his responsibility on the congestion charge by trying to blame everybody else when it was his decision. Mr Khan said the Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm would work to introduce statues and memorials which "better reflect London" including the inclusion of more black, disabled and LGBTQ+ people.
The foundation set up in memory of him provides support to schools and universities in London - including the Cass Business school.
Rhodes was a 19th century mining magnate and imperialist who helped Victorian Britain colonise much of Southern Africa. A scholarship in his name at Oxford was set up to help non-Brits study there. Beneficiaries include Bill Clinton and three former Australian PMs.A statue of Milligan, an 18th century Scottish merchan who owned 526 slaves at his Jamaican sugar plantation, stands outside the Museum of the Docklands near the West India he helped create near Canary Wharf.
