For 20 years, thousands of tourists and locals will have heard an unusual musical hum next to the Sandcastle Water Park, on the South Beach promenade in Blackpool.
The sound was generated the 49 foot-tall High Tide Organ, and art installation project created by artists Liam Curtin and John Gooding which was commissioned by Blackpool Council as part of the Millennium celebrations. The weird structure opposite Blackpool Pleasure Beach, which was a morph of the staff of a violin and a tentacle, was able to produce sound by using the movement of the sea.
Eight pipes connected to the water through the sea wall and linked directly to 18 pipes inside the organ. The rolling tide pushed air up the pipes to create music. The unusual landmark was certainly a conversation starter and staple of that area of the resort's seafront, with visitors fascinated by the sound it produced, with one visitor saying they found it "both beautiful and haunting.
They added in a review: "Like an eerie lost sea creature, the organ sends out it's cry on Blackpool promenade," while another tourist was taken in by the structure's "weird sound". They said: "It is just fantastic. It's described as a "musical manifestation of the sea" and my wife described it as being like some kind of creature.
"It really is a joyous creation and I imagine it's the sort of thing that would have Billy Connolly talking enthusiastically, and waxing lyrical, about it as only he can. It's definitely worth checking out if you're in Blackpool". But then, after standing proud for 21 years, in 2021, its own creator Liam Curtin called for it to be demolished claiming it had been "badly neglected" by the local authority and by the end of the year, it had vanished. The council later said the artwork had become "unsafe" and "beyond repair" due damage to the steel caused by unrelenting seaside weather.
