Earlier this week, WJLA reported that two separate dogs died shortly after staying at a Virginia Petsmart boarding facility.
Now, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria revealed a third dog has died within a week of staying there. While two of the dogs were cremated, one has not, and the AWLA 's Animal Services team sent the canine's body for an autopsy to hopefully determine its cause of death. The autopsy results are expected within a week.
"It's sad all the way around," said Tony Rankin of the AWLA to WJLA. He confirmed that the third dog was a Labrador Retriever. WJLA started following this story two weeks ago, when Alexandria resident Andrew Noles’s dog Clarke, a 3-year-old Aussiedoodle, died two days after he was dropped off at PetSmart. That was on June 29.
Sonia King of Upper Marlboro contacted Animal Control and WJLA after seeing the story and shared that her 7-year-old pure-bred Boxer Blu had also died after staying at the Potomac Yard PetSmart. Noles and King both say that their dogs had recently passed vet check-ups and were healthy before the visit.
