Traditional leaders are worried that initiations are in danger if informal settlements encroach on land meant for circumcision rituals
“If the invasion of initiation sites continues at this alarming rate, we will run out of sacred land traditionally earmarked for circumcisions, which has been an ancient practice in the Xhosa culture.”
These sentiments were expressed by concerned residents and traditional leaders after two major initiation sites in Khayelitsha township in Cape Town were invaded in the last 20 months.
