The embattled SABC is calling on Sars to help enforce revenue collection from South Africans.

This public hearing is part of the process to allow government to introduce the SABC Bill, which will introduce a new TV licence regime and funding model."We have moved far ahead of accessing the SABC from a TV, you can access it across devices. We have identified Sars as the most effective collector for the levies, as it already does so for taxes. This can assist us in the collection,“ Moilwa explained.
The SABC said that the TV licence model was useless and unenforceable due to non-compliance. Recent reports indicate that a mere 13% of households pay their licences.During the public hearing, SABC’s Group CEO Nomsa Chabeli told members of Parliament that the company required urgent interim relief through possible government grants.
“We want to introduce an interim measure while the bill is under development for a funding model framework. We believe that this three-year period should be expedited,” Chabeli said.
