The latest Stats SA figures put the number of people living in the country at 59.62-million

There are about 59.62-million people living in SA, an increase of 1.89-million from two years ago, Stats SA revealed on Thursday. The findings in the 2020 mid-year population estimates reveal that Gauteng remains the country’s most populous province, with approximately 15.5 million, accounting for 26% of the country’s total population.

It is followed by KwaZulu-Natal with an estimated 11.5-million people . Meanwhile, the Northern Cape remains the province with the smallest share of the population with approximately 1.29-million people . The survey also found that about 28.6% of the population is younger than 15. The majority of these reside in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.Of the elderly, the highest percentage 24.1% reside in Gauteng. Stats SA said the proportion of people aged 60 and older is increasing over time.Migration is an important demographic process as it shapes the age structure and distribution of the provincial population.
