The return to service of Kusile unit 4 should offer some immediate reprieve, while the return of other units at the power station could bring another 2 400 MW online.
The return to service of three more Kusile units before the end of the year is expected to bring a reprieve for the strained power system.
Further generation units at the new power station were also expected to come online before year-end, which should bring more respite, said Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.Following a spate of severe outages, load shedding was suspended on Saturday night due to low demand, with stage 2 set to resume late on Sunday afternoon.
The 4 800 MW mega coal-fired power plant - consisting of six 800 MW generation units - remains under construction, some 10 years after it was initially meant to be completed. "There's been significant improvement in the energy availability factor over a period of time. So, we're getting closer and closer."The generation units in question were granted an exemption from emissions standards until March 2025.
Ramokgopa said temporary interventions and mitigating measures would reduce the harmful impact of emissions.
