SA, make some space for these alternative artists. Here are some alternative artists who are shaking up the local music industry:
I love discovering new music and alternative, indie and underground artists are always a great place for me to start.
Songs such as Floating and Rewind set this melodic artist apart as she thrusts her audiences into a trance every time they hear her voice. Further releases such as Over U, More Summer and, most recently, Be Safe continue to show his growth and prove why he deserves to be a bigger artist than he is right now.In my humble opinion, Keziah Zoë Meyers, known professionally as Lordkez, is one of the coolest kids on the block. The visual aesthetics in her videos and her otherworldly music definitely catch the eye and ear.
She released her debut EP Revenge Season in 2019 and has since become one of the alternative music scene’s most profound acts. Lordkez is lo-fi royalty and her sound encompasses the golden era of this unique genre that arrived in 2017.There’s no musical group in South Africa quite like Club Valley right now. It consists of guitarist and vocalist Nigel Sibanda, and drummer and vocalist Jason Williams.
Angie Oeh is everything the new-age South African music scene is all about. She’s got dirty rhymes, an androgynous persona and even makes smoking look cool. She burst on to the music scene with a song called Dis Jou Wyfie in late 2021 and became a viral sensation on TikTok. Songs such as Iwatchtoomuchanime and Somethingyoushouldn’t do are great examples of this emotional rapper’s repertoire with the saddest bars. His newer material such as Hit and SuperStatic, both released late last year, show an artist growing with the times – and he does it with such finesse. Wolffisdead is more than just a musician, he is also a pioneer. Not much is known yet about the elusive Hirosamii, but that’s okay because he’s blowing up online – where it matters.
