The utility says it requires between 4,600 megawatts of generation capacity for maintenance, so that the national grid does not suffer years from now.
But energy expert Lungile Mashele says that we're already seeing demand levels usually seen in the middle of winter.
"So at the current point Eskom needs to focus on two things, this is their unplanned outages and make sure that they limit those to at least 12000MW unplanned outages."
