SA Football Association chief doctor Dr Thulani Ngwenya briefs the media at Safa House in Johannesburg on March 18 2020.SA Football Association chief medical officer Dr Thulani Ngwenya has laid out the association’s reasoning for suspending all football until April 4.

Ngwenya said internationally playing behind closed doors had proved not to be effective limiting infections from covid-19. “The unique situation we have in South Africa is that we have a lot of immune-compromised people with HIV‚ Diabetes‚ TB and Asthma.“Covid-19 is also highly contagious in situations of overcrowding. In South Africa we have an average household of about four people‚ and places like Alexandra and the Cape Flats that are highly clustered."Most clubs do not have detailed medical data of their athletes. Ngwenya said examples in Europe‚ which has become the next epicentre of the spread of covid-19 after China‚ were that closed-doors matches were ineffective limiting the spread of the coronavirus.
