NEW YORK: The S&P 500 closed lower on Wednesday as news of spiking pandemic data and the prospect of a new round of economic lockdowns dampened investor optimism over signs of economic recovery.
"There are periodic points of news flow where the positive news will carry the market and negative news will pressure the market," said Joseph Sroka, chief investment officer at NovaPoint in Atlanta."It's a return of health concerns versus economic optimism.
Unofficially, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 177.24 points, or 0.67per cent, to 26,112.74, the S&P 500 lost 11.12 points, or 0.36per cent, to 3,113.62 and the Nasdaq Composite added 14.41 points, or 0.15per cent, to 9,910.28.
