According to a source interviewed by the Daily Mail, screaming travellers staged a mutiny against the captain, demanding to be taken off the flight. The source described how a heavily intoxicated passenger was wrestled back to his seat by an air hostess. The flight, scheduled for 4pm on June 3, already had a rocky start with several passengers visibly drunk at takeoff as they headed to festival season in Albania.
The aircraft was packed with rowdy stag do groups and young people carrying vodka bottles from Duty Free, all anticipating a summer getaway on the Balkan Peninsula. However, their trip turned into a nightmare amid a terrifying thunderstorm that raged throughout the night, forcing two lengthy diversions. Flight RK8288 was diverted first to Italy and then to Greece before finally landing in Tirana at 5am local time, approximately nine hours after its scheduled arrival.
The source reported that food and water supplies ran out, distressed tourists staged a mutiny, and Greek police were called aboard to manage the chaotic situation. Passengers shouted at the cockpit, calling the pilot a coward and demanding he face them. About a dozen disgruntled tourists even demanded to leave the aircraft in Greece after hours of confusion.
One passenger threw up on himself just before takeoff from the first diversion, ran to the toilet, returned shirtless to cheers and boos. The anonymous passenger described extreme exhaustion and relief upon finally landing in Tirana, although the flight had been delayed by many hours. Throughout the ordeal, passengers only had access to limited snacks like Pringles.
Approximately four hours after takeoff, travellers believed they were about to land in Tirana, but the pilot announced they were actually approaching Brindisi, Italy. The plane remained on the tarmac there for two to three hours, during which the crew stopped selling food and drink. Passengers, thirsty and hungry, had to share snacks. The crew eventually allowed purchases but charged for water, and all supplies quickly ran out except for a few packs of crisps.
Ribena was offered when water ran out, but that too depleted. One intoxicated passenger ignored instructions and wandered the aisles, prompting an air hostess to physically wrestle him back to his seat. After a second diversion announcement to Thessaloniki, Greece, passengers erupted into a mutiny, shouting at the pilot.
