Erik Menendez is speaking out from behind bars against Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” calling it a “dishonest portrayal.” The brothers were convicted of killing their parents in 1989. NBC’s Kaylee Hartung reports for TODAY.
Ryan Murphy is defending 'Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story' after the real Erik Menendez blasted it for giving viewers a “dishonest portrayal' of him and his brother, Joseph 'Lyle' Menendez. The brothers were convicted for the 1989 murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. Murphy co-created and co-wrote the Netflix limited series, which tells the story of the murders using a rotating point of view.
' One entire half-hour episode, he pointed out, is devoted to the character of Erik describing how his father's alleged sexual abuse derailed his life. 'I’m used to this,' concluded Murphy. 'I write about provocative things and controversial things, and my motto is ‘Never complain and never explain.’” Erik and Lyle Menendez were convicted of their parents' murders in 1996 after two trials.
