Ryan Leary, a varsity basketball player for the Carle Place Frogs , recently achieved the impressive milestone of scoring 1,000 career points. This achievement holds even more significance as Leary joins his three older sisters and mother as the latest family member to reach this remarkable feat.
The 16-year-old shooting guard, who aspires to play college basketball, described the moment as an incredible experience, crediting his success to the tireless efforts of himself, his sisters, and his parents during the offseason. This momentous occasion took place on December 30th during a game against Malverne. All three of Leary's sisters are currently playing college basketball. Erin, the eldest, is a senior at Iona University; Amanda, the middle sister, is a junior at Springfield College; and Caitlin, the youngest, is a freshman at Mercy University. Leary attributes much of his development to observing and training alongside his sisters, recalling that they always practice together when home from college. They generously shared valuable tips on his jump shot, helping him hone his skills.Leary, who was initially called up to the varsity team as an eighth grader, readily embraced the guidance of his sisters. He now holds the family record as the fastest to reach 1,000 points. While he playfully teases his sisters about this accomplishment, he acknowledges their unwavering support throughout his basketball journey. Their mother, Karin Leary, shared that her children are incredibly close and use their successes to motivate and inspire each other. Karin herself scored her 1,000th point as a senior at Baldwin High School in 1989 and was not surprised to see her youngest son achieve a similar milestone. Like Erin, Karin later played for Iona University and currently works as a physical education teacher at East Rockaway High School. Interestingly, she coached three players to reach 1,000 points during her time as the head coach of the high school's girls basketball team. It was only recently, while reflecting on her accomplishments, that Mrs. 1,000 realized the remarkable coincidence of working with seven other players who had scored 1,000 points. Ryan, who is also a state champion soccer player at Carle Place, accurately predicted the game in which he would reach 1,000 points about a week beforehand. However, he did experience some mid-season anxiety, which his oldest sister helped him overcome. Erin, who witnessed her brother's accomplishment from the stands, expressed her excitement and pride, stating that it was a truly special moment for her as a big sister. The Leary family is known for hosting free clinics for younger children in their town and often invites them to practice in their backyard. Karin recalls an instance when Ryan shovelled their outdoor court during a snowstorm to practice his free throws, demonstrating his unwavering dedication. As Ryan enters his senior year, he intends to utilize his 12th-grade research project as an opportunity to coach more children in basketball. His father, Patrick Leary, a former college soccer player at Fairfield University and one of Ryan's state champion soccer coaches, jokingly teases him as the only family member without the 1,000-point record. As Ryan and the Frogs prepare for the postseason, he has set two goals for the remainder of his high school basketball career. Firstly, he aims to surpass 1,466 points to become the school's all-time leading scorer. If he falls short of this goal, he desires to break Caitlin's record of 1,357 points.
