Ryan Gosling in Project Hail Mary
Ryan Gosling seems to have achieved his goal of transitioning from arthouse movies to mainstream hits in the last few years. There can be no doubt about his box-office pull after this weekend, as his latest offering demolished projections and broke numerous records.
Gosling stars in Project Hail Mary, based on the bestselling book by Andy Weir, whose earlier novel inspired the hit film The Martian. Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon in the lead role, The Martian grossed more than $600 million worldwide against a budget of a little more than $100 million. It was a critical darling, going on to earn a Best Picture nod at the Oscars. Project Hail Mary is something of a spiritual sequel to that film, with a plot that also revolves around a man stranded in space. Both movies were written by Drew Goddard, who earned an Oscar nod for The Martian. That movie made $54 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office, a number that Project Hail Mary exceeded by more than $20 million. The new film marks the return of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who haven't directed a movie in over a decade. Project Hail Mary is their top-rated film with a 95% critics' score and a 97% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The site's consensus reads,"A visually dazzling space odyssey that's carried along effortlessly by the gravitational pull of Ryan Gosling at his most winning, Project Hail Mary is a near-miraculous fusion of smarts and heart."
