It’s lining up to be a big year for Ryan Gosling, who is the star in the biggest movie of the year so far, Project Hail Mary. The epic is based on Andy Weir’s critically acclaimed sci-fi novel. Weir is also famous for writing the sci-fi story that was adapted into Ridley Scott’s 2015 sci-fi movie, The Martian.
Project Hail Mary began playing in theaters everywhere last weekend, and Gosling is already being discussed as a potential candidate for Best Lead Actor at the 2027 Oscars. It wouldn’t be the first time that Gosling was recognized by the Academy for his performance, though. He earned his first Oscar nod for his work in Half Nelson before also receiving recognition for his performances in La La Land and Barbie. Gosling has starred in several entertaining hits that didn’t receive any recognition from the Academy, though, like The Fall Guy. The 2024 big-budget action thriller co-stars Emily Blunt and Winston Duke, and it follows a stuntman who lands in a conspiracy where he must track down a missing movie star to win back the love of his life. The Fall Guy was well-received by critics and audiences, earning scores of 82% and 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it grossed only $180 million at the box office against a $131 million budget, leaving it well short of its break-even point. However, as fans also continue to trek to theaters to watch Project Hail Mary, they’re also helping Gosling’s 2024 action thriller rewrite history on streaming.
