“Glee” star Naya tragically died during a boating trip with her son, Josey, now 9, in 2020.
Naya Rivera’s Son Feels Guilty Over Her Tragic Drowning Because He Was Too Afraid Of A “Big Spider” To Throw His Mom A Rope At Age 4at age 33. Naya had taken her then-4-year-old son, Josey, on the boat trip in Lake Piru, California, but drowned when she was unable to get back onto the boat when it started to drift. The incident report on her death concluded that Naya drowned after she exhausted herself getting Josey to safety, and the little boy was found alone on the boat sometime later.
Not only did the preschooler have to bear witness to his mom’s tragic death, Ryan also revealed that Josey feels guilty about not being able to save her. Once on board the boat, the 4 year old began looking for something to help Naya, and while he did find a rope, he was “too scared” to move it because there was a “big spider” on it.
Ryan was at Big Bear Lake, California, for a friend’s birthday when Naya and Josey went on the boat trip, and was in Ralph’s supermarket when Naya’s mom called to say that Naya had gone missing. For reference, Ryan and Naya were married between 2014 and 2018, and had a healthy co-parenting relationship at the time of her death.Ryan recalled collapsing “into a pallet of drinks” at the news of her disappearance before speeding the 145 miles to Lake Piru. He noted: “I just wanted to get to Josey.
Search-and-rescue divers looked for Naya for five days before her body was discovered, and after her funeral, Ryan took Josey back to his home state of West Virginia to escape the paparazzi. After a while, they returned to LA, and Naya’s sister Nickayla moved in with them for a year to help take care of her nephew.Nearly five years on, and Ryan understandably still struggles to help Josey make sense of his mom’s death.
