Stephen Means, Stefan Krajisnik and Andrew Gillis discuss Ohio State football

Listen to Buckeye Talk, your favorite Ohio State football podcast, five days a week with Stephen Means, Stefan Krajisnik and Andrew Gillis.heads into its first of two bye weeks of the 2024 season, which Day has classified as an ‘Improvement week.’

You know, we’re not talking about like Donovan Jackson, Cody Simon. You can still be kind of safe with how you want to use them for guys like, you know, Jeremiah Smith, Will Howard, Quinn Sean Judkins, right? Like they was talking about how this team feels like after the Western Michigan game, they’ve got some momentum now and you don’t want to have to have everyone leave and then come back and you’re a little bit rusty next week and you’re trying to get back in the groove.

but the way that this team is gonna play linebackers and the way that this schedule is gonna go, I don’t know how much a fourth linebacker is gonna play, especially after you get through the Marshall.I think, well, I was going to say one thing that Andrew had said there was that the day and Noel said that he’s a linebacker. They said they need him to be a linebacker, which tells you just more about, you know, the depth that the defensive line does have and that the linebacker room doesn’t have.

because they were sending him into the backfield and he was creating some advocate of sack in that game. So you saw the potential of what he can do at the line of scrimmage and behind, you know, in the backfield, but with the roster that they have and the talent that they have on a defensive line and now with, you know, three linebackers and, you know, Gabe Powers got a shout out from Jim Knowles today as well. It’s like there’s talent and spots that they’re using on this defense.

because a lot of our bell recess snaps came with the ones. Well, a lot of CJ Hicks’ snaps came in garbage time when the game was decided and you’ve got your twos and threes out there. He’s just stuck, man. And he’s not. He’s stuck like Baron Browning was stuck. But I think it’s even worse because with Baron Browning, there was a clear, OK, tough Borland’s the starting middle linebacker. But on third down, we’re going to bring in Baron Browning with CJ Hicks.

Andrew the way and I’m not asking you this to pick with you. promise I’m over that like we get it. You made some decisions in the preseason. We all did. We all made some decisions. You made some decisions sounds very like, it sounds very condescending. It sounds like I turned a corner in my life. It’s like, know, Andrew, he made some tough decisions in his life, but here he is. He’s ready to talk on Buckeye Talk. Listen to Andrew. He’s turned the corner. Good.

You know, he basically gave the like the equivalent of like, so Andrew, like, what do you think of Steven as your coworker? And then I just went, he’s a really nice guy. That’s pretty much what he said. Right. Like that’s pretty much how, yeah, there’s a massive but coming if he wasn’t standing in a podium. So yeah, to me, I think, you know, the innest thing is, is real. there’s going to be, you know, the part return within this has been great. The kick return stuff.

So what does that look like for Ohio State where you got two left guards, one who’s a potential all American and a potential first round pick and the other who is has grown from week one to week two and looks like he could be a potential starter for this roster moving forward. How do you do that? How do you manage that? What’s it look like when big template starts? So Ohio State’s been doing this thing since 2021 with some young guys where they have this bison role, the tackle eligible role.

You know, you have a situation where if Seth McLaughlin goes down or something like that, and you need a new center in that game, then Sirvel’s not going in. But that’s just, I don’t know if that’s what’s going to happen. when you look at the offensive line, that’s what I took from that situation is that they are going to play him as kind of that bison role. There’s going to be this, you know, there’s a hierarchy, I think is what is the best way to say that.

Jim knows is mindful of the fact that while we’ve looked good, we understand that somebody out there is going to look at our film and look at our team and find a way to pull calls in it. They’re thinking about that two weeks into the season. And I think that is a good thing for Ohio State in terms of what this defense might look like when it gets into some of those matchup games.

because he doesn’t have to be so locked into the next play. No, he could just sit there and yell at a referee or he can, you know, go around to his team and what it’s just, he said he loves it. I was one of the, he said, he said he likes his new role where he just gets to yell at everybody. And there’s, he doesn’t have to stay calm anymore. He gets to kind of let himself loose.

he’s got to also think of a play call. Whereas like in that situation this year, Chip Kelly’s driving down the field or the offensive driving down the field, Chip Kelly’s up in the booth. Chip Kelly’s sitting there going, all right, if it’s fourth and five or longer and Ryan wants to go for it, here’s what we’re calling. If it’s fourth and four or shorter and we want to go for it, here’s what we’re calling. If it’s fourth and one, here’s what we’re calling. And he’s just got plays ready to go.

Talking to players. Those are two things that Ryan Day mentioned and he said quote and everything else which was kind of with a smirk as he was referring to officials So there’s just football is so complex like there’s there’s so many layers That it’s important to be able to kind of manage that and kind of give up play calling duties to do itHe did give a little smirk, didn’t he? I like what coaches do a little smirk, because it’s like, I can’t say it, but you said it for me.

football minds like Ryan Day, Chip Kelly and Jim Knowles all have an access to this along with, you know, the, the, the, the rest of the staff, which is, you know, filled with coaches who have a ton of experience and know how to evaluate tape. It goes a long way. I think there’s a reason he keeps mentioning it because I think we’re going to see it probably pretty important when they get us some tighter games.

And you can show Will Howard, hey, here’s what the safeties did when they rolled the coverage this way, or when they sent the backers off the blitz here, here’s how they did it. And here’s what this looks like. Remember, we talked about this on film this week when, when this guy creeps, he’s coming, he doesn’t bail on that ever. Right. Or, Hey, if this guy’s shows a shade here and this, you know, and they’re showing a cover too.
