After years of speculation and tentative updates, Coogler's long-gestating reboot of the seminal sci-fi series took a major step forward at Hulu this past February. The pilot cast The Woman in the Yard star Danielle Deadwyler as the co-lead, with Coogler writing and directing the much-anticipated project. In an interview with journalist Dory Jackson at Awesome Con in mid-March, Anderson was asked about whether she's spoken to Coogler about the new X-Files. In response, the two-time Emmy winner and iconic Scully actress revealed that she read Coogler's script for the pilot. And in the quote, included below, Anderson shares her praise for what she's read: Yeah, we’ve had a few conversations. He’s such a cool guy and so talented, and the pilot script is really good. I’d say have an open mind and give it a chance, because it’s going to be f--ing cool. And it’s something different. It’s not, you know, it’s different and it’s special. So give it a shot. Anderson’s X-Files Script Comments Might Tease A New Role For Her Although specific details about the reboot have not been announced, it's known that the story will center on two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents as they form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena. The setup of the premise allows the reboot to connect to the original while also mirroring the unforgettable dynamic between Mulder and Scully. Deadwyler, also known for her acclaimed performances in Till and The Piano Lesson, is currently the only announced cast member for the pilot. It is unclear if, in the mold of the original, she'll be playing the believer or a skeptic in the vein of Scully. The reboot hails from the executive producing team of Yale and Coogler, as well as franchise creator Chris Carter, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler of Proximity Media. Sinners casting director Francine Maisler is also casting The X-Files pilot. If the pilot moves forward into a full series, Dexter and Legion writer Jennifer Yale will serve as showrunner. But as we've seen with the Buffy sequel show, from Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, a high-profile reboot is not a guarantee to get picked up. The reboot of The X-Files is still very much in the pilot phase, and Hulu could decide to pass on the project.
