RWE is testing nickel-hydrogen batteries, named Energy Storage Vessels (ESVs), in a pilot project in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The batteries, supplied by EnerVenue, are a potential alternative to lithium-ion batteries due to their high cycle life and lower safety risks.

RWE plans to test nickel-hydrogen batteries in a renewable energy pilot project at its Milwaukee, Wisconsin testing facility. The batteries, named Energy Storage Vessels (ESVs), are supplied by EnerVenue and are capable of over 30,000 cycles. These batteries can be a viable alternative to lithium-ion batteries, which are costly and vulnerable to thermal runaway.

The technology, which uses nickel hydroxide as the cathode and hydrogen as the anode, has been improved by a less expensive catalyst created by Stanford Professor Yi Cui in 2020
