It will be another blow for Rishi Sunak and his flaghship deportation scheme

Both Government and Labour sources had expected the Safety of Rwanda Bill to clear Parliament on Wednesday night, paving the way for the Prime Minister to make another attempt at getting stalled flights going.

One amendment would create an independent monitoring authority to adjudicate on whether Rwanda is safe, while another would exempt Afghans and others who fought alongside British forces from deportation to Rwanda. But Tory ex-Justice Secretary Sir Robert Buckland urged ministers to make concessions so that Afghans who served alongside the UK Armed Forces will not be deported to Rwanda.

Sir Robert, one of the few Tory critics in the Commons, also insisted that checks on ensuring Rwanda is a safe country were “not a wrecking amendment”.
