Rutgers hosted Wagner, an FCS team riding a 21-game losing streak, in the home opener for the 2022 season.

was ever going to take his foot off the gas, this was the day to do it. His Scarlet Knights had taken a four-touchdown lead against an overmatched Wagner team in the first quarter, and for the rest of the afternoon, the only question was when the fireworks would start.

The game will be memorable for only two reasons. One is the 66-7 final score, which is the most points the Scarlet Knights have scored under Schiano and the most since they put up since 68 against Colgate in the 1993 opener. The wins milestone, however, is still significant when you consider the road that Schiano has taken to get here. He had 12 wins through this first, then returned for his second stint with the program in a hole nearly as big as the one he inherited the first time.

Burns, an old-school coach, no doubt would have coached with the same intensity at the end of this game as he did at the beginning. Schiano didn’t take off his headset until final seconds. The fireworks were over. The actual fireworks were yet to come.Rutgers has played 1,013 football games over the past 153 years. To call a single pass the “best” of anything is utterly silly.

The bottom line? While this was a good opportunity for both young quarterbacks to get some confidence in a real game, it is unlikely to move the needle in either direction when it comes to establishing one quarterback as the guy for the Scarlet Knights.Again, allowing for the they-were-playing-Wagner disclaimer, the defense was dominant on Saturday afternoon. And a position of concern continues to impress.
