Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell discussed Caleb McConnell's injury status on Monday afternoon.
. The reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, McConnell is a key cog in the most efficient defense in the Big Ten.
He is averaging a career-high 9.7 points on 39.5% shooting, 5.4 rebounds, three assists, 2.5 steals and two turnovers in a career-high 33.3 minutes per game. He leads the Big Ten in steals per game during conference play and is 18 steals away from breaking program great Eddie Jordan’s record of 220 career swipes.
“You never want to lose anybody, especially not the defensive player in the country, but that’s what happens,” Pikiell said. “The seasons are long. We lost Mawot, unfortunately. These are obstacles. That’s what makes the season great, the journey you have to go through. You hate to lose anybody, especially him because he’s got a couple more games left to play in his senior year. The guys were ready the other day and they’ll got to be ready .
