As Rutgers plays its first game on CBS in over two decades, there will be two guys with deep connections to the program on the microphone.
Sunday’s broadcast — which is set for noon and marks Rutgers’ first appearance on CBS since the final home game of the 2000 season against Notre Dame — will have a distinct Rutgers flavor.
McCarthy’s tenure at Rutgers began at the same time as Schiano, both making their debuts during the 2001 season. He remained the voice of the Scarlet Knights through the 2003 season, when his color commentator Tim Pernetti — the man who would go on to play a major role in getting Rutgers into the Big Ten — urged him to join him at CS TV, now known as CBS Sports Network.
Quickly after calling it a football career, he launched into a media career that has expanded greatly in the year since he began. McCourty is a co-host of NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” a radio broadcaster for Westwood One and a TV broadcaster. He made his debut as a TV analyst at Rutgers last year,With every gig on every medium, McCourty tries to absorb everything he can from his broadcast partner, and McCourty is no exception.
McCourty never played on a Sunday, but he admits that when he was a player, he and his teammates were aware of the opportunity that came with Thursday night games in primetime on ESPN.
