Authorities say a firearm was brandished during a car meet before two vehicles sped away from campus.
Updated: Feb. 21, 2026, 8:59 a.m.A person pulled a gun out of a vehicle during an unsanctioned car meet in New Brunswick, police said.A late-night car meet at Rutgers University in Middlesex County turned tense Thursday evening when a person pulled a gun and pointed it at others before speeding off, police said.
The incident, which is being investigated as an aggravated assault, was reported around 8:16 p.m. at the university’s Livingston Campus in New Brunswick. The victims, who aren’t affiliated with the university, told investigators a suspect popped the trunk of a tan Toyota Camry, pulled out a firearm and pointed it at them, according to Rutgers Police Chief Kenneth Cop. The gun was never fired, and no one was injured. The car meetup was unsanctioned, Cop said in a Facebook post. The person fled the campus in the Camry along with another vehicle. Investigators haven’t released a description of the suspect. “The Rutgers University Police Department has increased patrols in the area and requests that anyone with information, or who may have been in the area at the time, contact the RUPD Detective Bureau,” Cop said. Police urged students, faculty and staff to stay alert, report suspicious activity immediately, avoid dark or isolated areas and travel in groups late at night.
