Rutgers has lost a player for a long period after he underwent surgery on Friday.
center Baye Fall underwent surgery on an injured hand Friday and will miss significant time, head coach Steve Pikiell revealed following his team’s home loss to Indiana. The contest against the Hoosiers is the third Fall missed, along with two road games against Wisconsin and Iowa in the past week.
Pikiell said he had not spoken to Fall since the surgery, but when asked if he expected the absence to be long-term, he said he “would assume so.”Watch our weekly podcast, live postgame reactions and moreIn his absence, Rutgers will continue to rely on starter Emmanuel Ogbole and backup Bryce Dortch to man the majority of the minutes at center. Fall has had limited participation on the court during his first season in Piscataway. He played 45 minutes across nine appearances, collecting 5 points on 2-of-6 shooting from the field and 1-of-2 shooting on free throws, 15 rebounds, 11 personal fouls, three blocks, two turnovers, one steal and one assist. Fall’s role became smaller as the season went on. He played a majority of his minutes in the opening five games of the season against low-major opponents Rider, Maine, Lehigh, American and Central Connecticut State. He played in just one game in the past month, a four-minute cameo in a blowout loss to Illinois in Champaign. His longest appearance of the winter came in another blowout: an 11-minute period in a 41-point loss to Michigan, the heaviest loss of head coach Steve Pikiell’s tenure at Rutgers.The lack of playing time follows the pattern of his first two years of college, a period in which played 71 total minutes across 13 career appearances for two schools: Kansas State and Arkansas.
