Russo Brothers Confirm Avengers: Secret Wars Will Be Their Final MCU Film

At SXSW London, Anthony Russo stated that Avengers: Secret Wars will be the last Marvel film he and his brother Joe direct, concluding their involvement in the MCU's upcoming two-part finale. They are currently focused on pre-production for Avengers: Doomsday and see both films as a single complete story.

During a session at SXSW London, director Anthony Russo addressed speculation about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe ( MCU ) and his partnership with brother Joe Russo.

When asked whether they would continue working on MCU films after the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars, Anthony Russo was definitive. He stated that Avengers: Secret Wars would be their final film in the franchise, concluding, "This is it.

" He reflected on their journey through the MCU, explaining that their narrative arc was originally conceived as a four-part story that began with Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014 and culminated with Avengers: Endgame in 2019. "For us, it was very much intended to be an ending," he emphasized. Despite this, the brothers are deeply involved in the two-part finale, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Anthony Russo clarified that while they are being developed as two separate films, they together form "a complete expression" of their intended story. He acknowledged that future collaborations with Marvel after Secret Wars remain a "possibility," but their current creative focus is entirely on delivering these two films. Joe Russo added a hint of humor, suggesting they would decide on any further partnership only after looking at photos of themselves in 2028, implying a significant break.

The Russos provided updates on the production status of Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for release on December 18, 2025. Anthony Russo shared that they are in the midst of pre-production and described their working style: "We like doing things, many things, at the same time.

" He also revealed that some work for Doomsday will continue until November. He clarified a recent comment about handing off work, explaining that it simply means delegating certain tasks to other teams for a few weeks to manage the complex timeline, not a departure from the project.

In addition to directing, the brothers are co-producing both films through their production company, AGBO, ensuring their creative oversight extends beyond just the director's chair. This announcement marks a potential turning point for the MCU's "Infinity Saga" directors. The Russo brothers became synonymous with the franchise's biggest moments, directing Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Their decision to step back after Secret Wars suggests a deliberate closure to their chapter in the sprawling universe.

While Marvel Studios will undoubtedly continue, the departure of such key creative forces raises questions about the future tonal and narrative direction of the Avengers and related properties. Fans will now watch closely as the Russos craft the endings for both Avengers: Doomsday and the multiversal epic Secret Wars, knowing this may be their final contribution to the superhero saga they helped define
