the Russian missile cruiser the Moskva
this week came shortly after the issue of a new Ukrainian postage stamp that highlights the warship in an image celebrating national resistance to Moscow’s invasion. Soon after Russian forces launched their invasion on Feb. 24, the Moskva sailed to Ukraine’s Snake Island, in the Black Sea, and ordered Ukrainian border guards there to surrender.
Ukraine issued a postage stamp on Tuesday commemorating the now-legendary response of one defender who addressed the warship with an expletive, as reported in a recording released by government officials. The phrase has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance, scrawled on military checkpoints and emblazoned on T-shirts.
Russian forces captured the soldier along with other Ukrainian forces, and later released them in a prisoner swap, according to Ukrainian authorities.and matching commemorative envelopes in an image posted on his Instagram page on Wednesday. Hours later, the Moskva was seriously damaged by an explosion. Ukrainian officials said it was the result of a Ukrainian missile strike, while Russia said the ship’s ammunition detonated.
