A Russian oil tanker, the Unity, has lost propulsion and is drifting in the Bay of Biscay off the coast of France, raising concerns about a potential environmental disaster. The incident occurred on January 23rd amidst stormy conditions, according to the maritime news outlet Splash247. Newsweek reached out to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for comment but received no immediate response.
The Unity, a 16-year-old Aframax-class tanker, departed Primorsk, Russia's second-largest port, on January 16th carrying Russian oil destined for Mangalore, India. Owned by the Moscow-based Argo Tanker Group, the tanker is 245.07 meters (804 feet) long and 42 meters (137 feet) wide. This incident comes amid a series of recent issues involving Russian vessels, particularly in the Baltic Sea. The loss of any ship carrying oil, especially under the current sanctions against Russia's shadow fleet, poses a significant blow to the industry and the country's economy. This is not the first time a Russian ship has faced difficulties at sea recently. In another incident, Moscow's Eventin, a Panama-flagged tanker suspected of being part of Russia's shadow fleet, broke down a few miles north of Rügen Island in the Baltic Sea. German authorities were able to establish a tow connection and prevent the ship, which was carrying an estimated 99,000 tons of oil, from drifting further into the NATO waters. Social media users expressed concern about the Unity's situation, with some describing it as a 'broken environment bomb' in a treacherous location. The fate of the Unity and whether French or international authorities will tow it before it deteriorates further remains uncertain
