The conspiracy resulted in the extortion of more than $16 million in ransom payments, prosecutors said Monday.

The Department of Justice unsealed charges Monday against a Russian national who allegedly helped lead a ransomware operation in the U.S. and other countries.

“It’s only a matter of time, cybercriminals will be caught and brought to justice,” U.S. Attorney Erek Barron for the District of Maryland said in a“According to the indictment, Ptitsyn facilitated the worldwide use of a dangerous ransomware strain to target corporations and various organizations, including government agencies, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and critical infrastructure,” Barron continued.

Victims would allegedly receive decryption keys in exchange for payments after negotiating through phone calls and emails. If they didn’t pay the ransom, the prosecutors said, conspirators would threaten to publicize the victims’ files. Ptitsyn appeared in U.S. court earlier this month after being extradited from South Korea, according to the prosecutors, who said he was booked on wire fraud, extortion in relation to hacking and conspiracy to commit computer fraud and abuse, among other charges.
